PAST EVENTS

July 11, 2026 | Nookachamps Forest Tour | Mount Vernon, WA
UPS past president Ken Osborn hosted an educational tree farm tour, his 120-acre property. About 15 people attended, including small forest landowners and several forestry professionals. Discussion topics included pruning, riparian areas, replanting ratios, timing for precommercial thinning activities, and the future of forest planning with AI. The UPS Chapter extends its sincere thanks to Ken for sharing his property and knowledge; and to the forestry professionals who offered their expertise, making the tour incredibly valuable for attendees.

Hundred Acre Wood Tour June 2026

June 13, 2026 | Hundred Acre Wood Tour | Carnation, WA
UPS members and friends toured Hundred Acre Wood with landowner and UPS member Ben Davis. The group explored the farm’s scenic 100+ acres by road and trail, visiting three forest stands at different growth stages while learning about the property’s history and forest management practices. The tour gave members a chance to connect with one another. It was a great day with a strong turnout!

May 17-19, 2026 | WFFA Annual Meeting | Spokane, WA

Every year the State Office of WFFA organizes an annual meeting in conjunction with host chapter(s). This years’ theme was Family Forests: Celebrate! Educate! Inspire! For more info, visit: www.wafarmforestry.com/AM26

Dallman Tour May 2026

May 9, 2026 | Dallman Tree Farm Tour | Snohomish, WA
UPS Chapter members toured a privately held family tree farm with host Frank Dallman, who is planning a summer commercial thinning and harvest. Frank discussed the details of forest harvest planning and estate planning for the property. The scenic property includes a beaver pond. Thank You, Frank!

UPS Info Table at Wood Expo

April 18-19, 2026 | Skagit Wood Expo – Skagit County Fair Grounds | Mount Vernon, WA
UPS Chapter members staffed an information table at the 4th Annual Skagit Wood Expo, where they connected with visitors and shared WFFA’s mission. Jon Wilson handcrafted wooden trees for the chapter to give away, and they were popular with both adults and children. Thank You to the UPS volunteers for tabling this event: Jon, Nick, Dean, Hollis, Teresa and Paul! The Skagit Wood Expo & Marketplace features live woodworking, wood carving, and saw-milling demonstrations, along with a unique artisan marketplace of more than 50+ local vendors and family-friendly activities. Find more information at www.skagitwoodexpo.com.

April 11, 2026 | 2026 Forest Landowner Assistance Workshop | Mount Vernon, WA
This one-day workshop was designed to educate small forest landowners in the northwest region. Morning sessions covered the importance of setting forest goals and objectives, adopting a “forest timeline mindset,” NRCS program updates, forest health updates in the PNW, and the value of participating in WFFA! After a UPS Chapter WFFA-sponsored lunch, the afternoon program offered one-on-one sessions with Service Foresters. See this contact sheet to view your local service forester. This annual workshop was presented by USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Washington State DNR, Conservation Districts from Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan, Island, Snohomish counties, and WFFA. Thank You to Nick Kunz of Skagit CD for organizing this event for forest landowners! We appreciate your leadership.

March 14, 2026 | Crystal Lake Tree Farm Day | Woodinville, WA
Residents and friends gathered to celebrate the 43rd Annual Tree Farm Day. Crystal Lake is a special private community-owned tree farm located in suburban King County. See the recap.

Wilson Tree Farm Tour – Jon Wilson, UPS Chapter Treasurer

November 13, 2025 | Mackenzie Castings Tour | Arlington, WA
UPS members toured a foundry hosted by member and former co-owner, Jon Wilson. The foundry tour was a little outside the box for our forestry group (haha), but boy was it interesting! We made a few jokes to tie it into forestry! We learned about a long wooden tool called a “wood slag scraper”. This wood tool works better than a metal tool to scrape off the slag after they pour. You don’t get to see something like this every day. Tour photos.

Oct 11, 2025 | Wilson Tree Farm Tour | Snohomish, WA
Jon Wilson, UPS member gave us a great tour of his forest and nursery area. Thank You, Jon! We saw an array of diverse tree species from young to mature trees. Species included redwood, incense cedar, noble fir, and Port Orford growing next to PNW natives. Hollis Crapo of DNR educated us on Alternate Plans.

UPS Annual Meeting Sept 2025 – Teresa Weldon, UPS Chapter President

Sept 6, 2025 | UPS Annual Meeting & Potluck | Arlington, WA
Each chapter holds an annual meeting to discuss various topics. View the meeting minutes. This year was a lot of fun! It included a member gifting handcrafted wooden trees, a story about an old tree farmer, an angry bull and a forest-themed poetry reading by small forest landowner Joanie K Firnstahl Koorn. The meeting wrapped up with a short forest tour.

August 16, 2025 | Five Point Lodge | Monroe, WA
This UPS Chapter tour was hosted by member and past chapter president, Mike Blais. Mike showed us a property map, shared stories and artifacts of his family tree farm such as an old survey and horseshoe. The group enjoyed learning and sharing about important forestry topics while on the tour. Learn about Mike’s tree farm story here.

July 18, 2025 | Fritch Mill | Snohomish, WA
The UPS Chapter met to tour the family owned Fritch Mill in Snohomish. The tour was well attended, with just over 15 attendees (mostly members, forestry professionals, and a some non-members too). Hollis Crapo with DNR helped arranged the tour for our chapter. The owners, also brothers, Eric and Randy Fritch gave us a warm welcome and hosted us. First, we toured the mill area followed by a tour of their managed timberlands surrounding their mill. The mill is unique as it handles specialty orders and larger logs, which is a valuable resource for our community and beyond. The timberlands are well managed with new plantings, thinning work, stream protection buffers and overall environmental stewardship throughout. In addition, Randy Fritch recently secured a Long Term Application forest practice permit with DNR (valid for 15 years) for timber harvesting. The tour lent to some great conversations and connections within our group. Great tour!
