Report on November 5, 2025 Meeting
Attendees of South Sound and Grays Harbor chapters enjoyed pizza before watching the 1925 silent movie “A Story of West Coast Lumber, the Schafer Brothers Logging Company”. The Schafer Brothers Logging Co. Incorporated in 1913 and became one of the largest logging and milling companies in Grays Harbor until they sold out to Simpson Timber Company in 1955. The movie was digitized in 2019 and can be viewed on YouTube.
An interesting discussion occurred as some people’s family had been employed by Schafer and other members owned land that had once belonged to Schafer.
Report on June 7, 2025 meeting
On June 7 the Chapter hosted the annual picnic and field event at Ken Miller’s tree farm. A record 61 people showed up for a tour of Ken’s tree farm and to hear an excellent presentation put on by Ken Bevis, Senior Stewardship Wildlife Biologists for the DNR.
Report on May 13, 2025 Meeting
The May 13th meeting featured a program by Matthew Axe, Forest Resiliency Manager for the South Sound Puget Sound Region of the DNR. He gave us an excellent presentation on how the DNR service forestry program can assist small forest land owners with technical assistance and forest stewardship plans. He emphasized that the technical assistance involves providing State cost share money for forest management and civil cultural treatments only.
The South Sound Farm Forestry Association (SSFFA) chapter became active again with a meeting on March 11, 2025 that included the traditional pizza and pop dinner. The chapter plans to meet the second Tuesday of the month at least four to five times each year. When meeting indoors, our meetings will be held in the conference room on the second floor of the Market Place Building in Olympia.
At the March 11 meeting we held an election of officers who will serve for a two year term. Vic Musselman was elected President and Bonnie Miller Treasurer. There were no nominees for Vice-President or Secretary at this time. A Program followed with Todd Olson, from the DNR Small Forest Landowner Office, giving us a presentation on the Regulation Assistance Program, of which he is the Manager.
Regulation assistance foresters are available to help SFLOs with understanding and applying Forest Practice Rules and Board Manual guidance when undertaking the completion of a Forest Practice Application (FPA). They are especially helpful to SFLOs in understanding and applying this information on the ground, particularly when preparing an alternate plan.
