Pacific County Tree Farmers of the Year
Jim and Carolyn Hillery were recognized as Pacific County Tree Farmers of the Year at a luncheon on October 18.
Jim and Carolyn arrived with son John in the Raymond area in January of 1964. Jim had just graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Forest Management. Son Jamie arrived in mid 1964.
Jim started his career with the DNR in Menlo as a forest practice forester. Over the next 12 years he held several positions including Assistant District Administrator and left the DNR as the Raymond Local Manager. During this time, Jim and Carolyn purchased the beginnings of their tree farm on the Oxbow Road in 1974. Carolyn planted many trees on this property by herself since she chose to be a stay-at-home mom. According to the notes, her best day was 500 1+1 Douglas-fir trees on Jan 7, 1975. She only had 300 the next day in 3 hours.
This started an interest for the family in forest management. Over the years their sons planted thousands of trees for other landowners while enjoying the satisfaction of watching trees grow that they planted. It led to careers in the forest industry for both.
Jim then joined Weyerhaeuser for the next 26 years in a variety of forest management work in the field encompassing the Aberdeen area, the Grays River camp and later the PeEll-Chehalis operating area. He retired from Weyerhaeuser as the Twin Harbors Land Use Manager. After a few years of retirement in 2009, he and Carolyn purchased an additional 40 acres of timberland that adjoins the original Oxbow property.
He and his wife Carolyn enjoyed some time traveling to areas that had a timber industry with 3 trips to New Zealand and Chile and many trips to Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands.
Jim and Carolyn have also provided leadership and support for the small forest landowners of Pacific County for 47 years.

Report on Chapter Activities, November 2025
Our booth at the Pacific County Fair was a great success this year. We had the greatest number of people working on putting the booth together we have had for quite some time. DNR provided Smokey Bear on Saturday, and he was enjoyed by the fair attendees, especially the children. We won the best booth in the commercial building and the Best Theme Award. We also had 6 new members join.
In September we toured Stan and Kathy Stevens’ Wildwood Tree Farm. She demonstrated hydrosol distilling of western red cedar and restoration of their log cabin built by her father from trees on the tree farm. Approximately 30 people attended the meeting.
We are currently accepting orders for a coastal redwood and sequoia tree sale, $2.00/tree for members and $4.00/tree for nonmembers. Nonmembers can get trees for the member price if they join PCFFA.
