Check out the Chapter pages of the website, containing officer contact information, as well as "Good News" and photos from Chapter events past, present and future!

Here are some opportunities to learn about managing your forestland and/or making a difference in your community:

  • Attend Timber, Fish & Wildlife (TFW) or Forest Practice Stakeholder meetings and report back to your Chapter.  See our online calendar for the Pacific Cascade Region series of TFW meetings.  Stakeholder meetings are being held on April 27 and 28 in the South Puget Sound region.  To find details of the Regional office nearest you, follow the DNR link in the Quick Links section of this newsletter.

  • Sponsor a Teacher on a "Sustainable Forestry Tour" from the Temperate Forest Foundation. Click here for a tour brochure just for sponsors. Visit the TFF website at www.forestinfo.org for more details.

  • Sponsor a Youth to attend Natural Resources Youth Camp" (NRYC).  The dates for 2010 are June  20 - 26.  If you know of interested young people, please contact NRYC at www.nryc.org for camp info.  Contact your Chapter President or Erica at the WFFA office for scholarship information.

  • Organize a Seedling Sale or support an existing one.  Bob McNitt of the Forest Seedling Network (see article under "Website Highlights") has offered to announce these events as a service to our Chapters and the many individuals who are looking for 1 - 10 seedlings.

US Forest Service seeks your input...

Legislative update by Rick Dunning, Executive Director of the WFFA:

After being approved by both Houses of the Legislature, WFFA's second piece of legislation of the 2010 session (SB 6776) will not be going to the governor for her signature.   SB 6776 called for the Legislature's two Natural Resource committees to create a joint workgroup to find solutions to small forest landowners issues by September 15, 2010.

The chairmen of those two committees, Sen. Ken Jacobsen and Rep. Brian Blake, already had the power to work together but allowed the legislation to go forward as a signal of their commitment to small landowners.  The legislation was well received in both chambers, receiving unanimous votes in both the House and Senate.  However, both chairmen, citing the separation of powers, had concerns about sending legislation to the governor on an issue that is completely within the purview of the legislative branch.

It remained on the Senate "concurrence" calendar as the regular session came to a close.

We are still in the game and I will continue to work with Martin Flynn and the Natural Resource Chairs to promote creation of a legislative interim work plan focused on our SFL issues and the undermining of FREP.

Stay tuned...
